Social pressure, uncertainty, and cooperation

چکیده

We analyse the role of uncertainty in a sequential game where players have to decide whether to contribute to a public project or not. A player’s payoff may depend on his belief about the other player’s action which allows us to model social pressure. Using the theory of psychological games, we show that the players’ propensity to choose an individually costly action such as cooperation in a public project may increase if there is some uncertainty about who has cooperated before. A central agency, e.g. the government, can induce incomplete information by using a randomization policy, thus crowding in private contributions.

Environmental Uncertainty and the Global Biogeography of Cooperative Breeding in Birds

Understanding why organisms as different as amoebas, ants, and birds cooperate remains an important question in evolutionary biology. Although ecology can influence cooperation and conflict within animal societies and has been implicated in species differences in sociality, the environmental predictors of sociality across broad geographic and taxonomic scales remain poorly understood. In partic...

Uncertainty and Cooperation: Analytical Results and a Simulated Agent Society

Uncertainty is an important factor that influences social evolution in natural and artificial environments. Here we distinguish between three aspects of uncertainty. Environmental uncertainty is the variance of resources in the environment, perceived uncertainty is the variance of the resource distribution as perceived by the organism and effective uncertainty is the variance of resources effec...

On the evolution of cooperation under social pressure in multiplex networks

In this work, we aim to contribute to the understanding of human prosocial behavior by studying the influence that a particular form of social pressure, "being watched," has on the evolution of cooperative behavior. We study how cooperation emerges in multiplex complex topologies by analyzing a particular bidirectionally coupled dynamics on top of a two-layer multiplex network (duplex). The cou...

Networks of Artificial Social Interactions

Evolution of cooperation is a fundamental question of socio-biology. Intrinsic factors like kinship play an important role in cooperation among selfish individuals. External factors like uncertainty and the structure of the social interaction network also contribute significantly to the evolution of cooperation. Here I use agent-based simulations to generate artificial social networks. I show t...

Cooperation in Social Dilemmas through Position Uncertainty∗

We propose a simple mechanism that sustains full cooperation in one-shot social dilemmas among a finite number of self-interested agents. Players sequentially decide whether to contribute to a public good. They do not know their position in the sequence, but observe the actions of some predecessors. Position uncertainty provides an incentive to contribute in order to induce potential successors...
